About Adapt SoftFlex Skin Barrier Rings

What these are & how they help

SoftFlex barrier rings are soft, mouldable hydrocolloid seals that sit between your skin and your ostomy wafer. You shape them by hand to fill the gaps and uneven spots around your stoma, so output can't creep underneath — the main cause of leaks and sore skin. Many people use them as a sting-free alternative to barrier paste.

When SoftFlex rings help

A barrier ring is useful when:

  • The skin around your stoma is uneven, creased, or scarred
  • You want a custom fit without using alcohol-based paste
  • You've had output getting under your wafer

If your stoma is flush or retracted, a convex barrier ring may suit you better — your stoma care nurse can advise.

How to use

  1. Start with clean, dry skin around your stoma.
  2. Stretch and mould the ring to fit the size and shape of your stoma. You can cut, bend or stack rings for the fit you need.
  3. Press the ring gently around the base of your stoma so it sits flush.
  4. Apply your wafer or pouch over the ring, smoothing outward to remove any gaps.
  5. Hold your hand over the area for a minute to help the seal bond.

Caring for your peristomal skin

Change your ring before it's worn through — for most people every few days, but follow how your skin feels. If you see redness or irritation that doesn't settle, check with your stoma care nurse.

Frequently asked questions

What is a skin barrier ring for?

It fills the gaps and uneven areas around your stoma to create a secure seal, helping stop leaks and protecting the skin underneath.

Can I cut, stack or mould these?

Yes. SoftFlex rings are mouldable hydrocolloid — you can stretch, bend, cut and stack them to get a custom fit. No paste needed.

How are these different from barrier paste?

They give a similar custom fit, but without the sting of alcohol-based pastes and without the mess — many people find them easier and more comfortable.

Do these contain ceramide?

No — SoftFlex is Hollister's standard hydrocolloid barrier ring. If you'd like a ceramide-infused ring to help support peristomal skin, see the Hollister CeraRing range.

Will they help stop leaks?

Yes — by filling uneven areas and sealing around the stoma, they reduce the chance of output reaching your skin.

How long does a ring last?

It varies, but many people change theirs with each pouch-system change, every few days. A box contains 10 rings.

What size are these rings?

These are the 7806 rings with a 4-inch (98 mm) outer size and a 1-3/16-inch starting opening, which you mould to fit.

Are these FSA/HSA eligible?

Yes. Ostomy barrier rings are an eligible medical expense, so you can use FSA or HSA funds.
